SOUNDSCAPE SCHOOL FOR THE RECORDING ARTS

The Soundscape School for the Recording & Mixing Arts was founded by Timothy J. Smith in 2008 and has since then expanded to become one of the most highly respected institutions for audio education in the Midwest. With over twenty years working professionally in the music industry, Tim laid out the foundation for each of our offered programs. His audio background knowledge spans from analogue to digital recording as well as live sound engineering.

Throughout his career as a performing and recording artist, Tim Smith independently released nine albums worldwide, handled a Michigan based music distribution company (with over 160 Midwest accounts), toured the united states four times as a performing musician and lastly founded one of the city’s most rapidly growing recording-mixing training facilities to date.

More recently, recording, mixing engineer Tim Smith has created a unique system for molding and shaping a new breed of sound balance engineers! Needless to say, each of our State Licensed Programs are privately Instructed by Timothy J. Smith, on site at the Soundscape Recording Studio in Royal Oak Michigan.

We offer flexible course schedules catering to the needs of each of our students. There are no prerequisites, previous education or training required for any of our offered programs. In Addition, students may also take advantage of (unpaid) work experience internship opportunities immediately following successful program completion.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS
“…I really enjoyed my time here at The Soundscape Studio & School for the Recording Arts. Tim & Dustin are both great teachers who really know how to translate the art of making a record in the studio. This was the most difficult venture that I have ever done, in addition, I have learned well over what I expected. I had a blast physically going through the process in the studio and I've already been recommending this class to all of my musician friends! Thanks for an amazing experience. ”
Derek Nyquist 2017
Musician/Songwriter - Recording/Mixing Engineer

“…I very much enjoyed taking this class, in fact I would have to say that I learned something new every single day! The program was put together well, I felt comfortable and confident each step of the way. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone looking to get into recording. ”
Brian Russie 2017
Musician/Songwriter - Recording/Mixing Engineer
Royal Oak, MI
“…My experience overall was great! This program had it's chalanges but nothing too extreme. I learned a lot more than I was expecting. The only downside to that was I wish there was more time to dive deeper into the information. Sixteen weeks goes by fast! Regardless, I would definitely recommend this course to someone else! ”
Alexander Lambert 2017
Musician/Songwriter - Recording/Mixing Engineer
Troy, MI
“…It was amazing to be in such an awesome learning environment with an instructor who is truly passionate. My goal is to one day embody the lessons you have taught me and eventually border on being your equal. I walked away from this program inspired with much more focus and understanding about the art of recording, mixing & mastering! ”
Jack Reed 2017
Musician/Songwriter - Recording/Mixing Engineer
Northville, MI
“…I absolutely enjoyed my time here studying under Tim. Having come into the program with some prior knowledge I did not find the program to be too difficult, I still needed to go home and study though I never felt extreme pressure before a quiz or exam. I think the crucial part of this class for me was that I was engaged twice a week in an actual studio learning with industry standard gear. In that regard, my time here was an invaluable experience that I could never get by just doing internet research or reading books. I knew someone experienced like Tim would show and teach me things that I had never heard of and even show me new ways of doing things that I already had been doing. I would absolutely recommend this course to someone interested in becoming a recording or mixing engineer. ”
Dustin Wahba 2017

“…I really loved the program. It was definitely a challenge, however Tim is easy to work with and learn from. I learned so much more than I thought I would and I can honestly say that I feel comfortable using the gear and software after my sixteen weeks of training. I would 100% recommend this class to anyone!”
Alexander Howard 2017

“…I think the class was great though not too difficult, just a lot of information to retain. I enjoyed learning in a genuine recording studio using a variety of outboard gear. Having the opportunity to learn in a one on one environment is the key to this program. I would recommend this class to anyone interested in getting into this field of work.”
Christopher Herr 2017

“…My experience has been fantastic! This program offers real world, hands on knowledge and experience that cannot be taught in a lecture type setting. The program was challenging, you have to put in the time outside the course reviewing materials and studying. I wouldn't expect a credible program to not be challenging. I learned more than expected, especially in regards to microphone placement and capturing live sounds. This type of curriculum is the best way to gain an understanding of how to run a recording sessions from start to finish. It couldn't get any better than working one on one with an experienced professional in a fully operational facility!”
Josh Awrey 2016
Musician/Songwriter - Recording/Mixing Engineer

“…I had an incredible experience at The Soundscape Studio! I learned so much more in 16 weeks than I thought possible. It was difficult at times, however if you keep up with all of the program materials you will not have any issues. THE READING PAYS OFF! I would have to say that I learned way more than I expected upon entering the class. Thankfully, it is the one place that teaches all of the info that I had been searching for, for years! I would definitely recommend this program to anybody who is interested in recording, mixing and mastering audio. I have already recommended this class to some of my friends!”

“…Working one on one with Tim was not only enjoyable but it was an amazing learning experience. I walked into this course with very little knowledge about recording and walked out with the skillset to start a new career. This class gave me 100% hands on training, not just in front of a computer. I was able to work with musicians throughout the class as I learned how to properly capture sound with absolute commercial results. If this is what you want to do then this is the class you need to take.”
